Happy turtle image with hobby objects around it.

So you decide to learn English. You get a burst of motivation, and you study every day for 5+ hours, for 3 days. And then you give it up. Been there? Because I have.

Learning English online offers incredible flexibility, it fits perfectly into your busy schedule, in theory. And when you start studying it seems like it all works out perfectly, but within days or maybe a week the motivation falls away and leaves you feeling annoyed, tired and in most cases pathetic. “Why can’t I just stick to it?” “Why do I always fail at these things?” You’re not alone and you’re not the problem. Your habits are. When you’re juggling work, life, and study, it’s easy to lose sight of the big picture, your motivation and your goals.

In this guide, you will learn how to:

  • Set Specific, Achievable Goals
  • Establish a Consistent Study Routine
  • Follow Educational English Content on Social Media
  • Immerse Yourself in English Daily
  • Join an Online Learning Community
  • Celebrate Every Milestone
  • Reconnect with Your Motivation

Set Specific, Achievable Goals

The biggest enemy of motivation is consistently failing to achieve your goals. You’re doing nobody a favor by setting the bar skyhigh. Acknowledge that the motivation is gonna dip and rise at times, and set goals that you can meet on your best and worst days:

  • Select one large aim you wish to achieve by a certain time.
  • Select a clear, achievable daily goal.
  • Break your objective into smaller, manageable tasks.
  • Start doing them one by one.

For example, your aim might be to learn English enough to carry casual conversation. Your daily goal could be to dedicate 15 minutes to learn a different aspect of English speaking per day, one day for grammar, one for vocabulary, one for speaking practice with a partner. Then you break that goal into manageable tasks, like on vocabulary day learn five new words.

Establish a Consistent Study Routine

This one’s easy in theory. Find a time that works best for you whether it’s early morning or late evening, set an alarm and block your calendar for that time period. 10 minutes counts. Make it a habit to study regularly; try not to skip a time to study because a consistent routine not only helps you build momentum but also reinforces your commitment to learning.

Follow Educational English Content on Social Media

What if your schedule is too inconsistent to establish a daily time for study? Well this next one is a good alternative. Find some social media accounts that teach English in a way you find engaging, and make it a habit to look at those when you’re waiting for the bus, in an elevator, or in a train.

Immerse Yourself in English Daily

The point is to make English a part of your everyday life, to reinforce what you learn and make sure you remember as much of it as you can.

  • Listen to English podcasts.
  • Watch your favorite TV shows or movies in English.
  • Change your phone’s language settings to English.
  • Watch news in English.

Join an Online Learning Community

So you’re studying English by yourself as much as you can. That’s great. But you might also want to consider joining a community of people to converse with, exchange learning tips with, and to celebrate each others’ achievements.

  • Look into online language exchange platforms.
  • Attend online speaking clubs.
  • Try to meet people from other countries and chat with them.

Celebrate Every Milestone

It’s easy to lose motivation if you don’t make a big deal of your successes. So make every milestone count, because it does. Get yourself a reward, a coffee, a book or a game, something to bring you joy and remind you of your good work.

Reconnect with Your Motivation

Consistently remind yourself why you are learning English, whether it’s career growth, travel opportunities, or personal fulfillment, and keep that bigger picture in mind.

Staying motivated and consistent in your online English learning journey can be challenging, but with the right approach, it’s definitely achievable. By setting clear goals, creating a study routine, immersing yourself in the language, and connecting with a community, you can maintain your motivation and steadily improve your skills. Best of luck
